When and Why was decided establishment of the organization The idea of establishing the "Union of Democrat Meskhs" was originated whilst defense of Akhaltsikhian journalist's rights. In 1997, a young journalist Amiran Meskheli, and his friends decided to found an independent newspaper. The newspaper's purpose would be informing readers about the current events of our region objectively. The newspaper "Orioni" did not even exist for a year because of the incognito interview taken by Meskheli from one of the Georgian soldiers. The soldier spoke about the sexual violence and homosexuality in Georgian Army. After the publication of the article, the editorial office was raided several times and the editorial staff was threatened. Soon the author of the article, Meskheli was enlisted in military service. (He was enlisted in the same part of the Army that was threatening revenge to him because of the article) Meskheli with the help of "Liberty" fought for his rights with the executive committees. Three months later on August 18, 1998 a court decided Meskheli was freed from the military service. Meskheli and his friends, who saw the violation of Human Rights in their experiences, decided to establish the NGO, which would try to help the population to protect their rights. Therefore, they had accomplished their plan, and on September 3 1998, the NGO "Union of Democrat Meskhs" was registered in the local Court of Justice. ("Horizonti" # 8 1999)
